Phone Screen Size Comparison Calculator

Compare two phone, foldable, or tablet screens by real width, height, and screen area. This helps you see how much bigger a device display really feels, not just what the diagonal number says.

Diagonal size does not tell the full story. A wider foldable or tablet can have much more usable screen area than a tall phone with a similar diagonal.

How to use the Phone Screen Size Comparison Calculator

Enter the diagonal size and aspect ratio for Device A and Device B. The calculator returns the real width, height, screen area, and percentage difference between the two displays.

This is useful when comparing compact phones, large phones, foldables, small tablets, and full-size tablets. A phone screen size comparison should include area because diagonal size alone can hide how much usable display space changes.

If you also care about sharpness, use the Phone PPI Calculator. For larger displays, the Screen Size Comparison Calculator works well for monitors, TVs, and ultrawide screens.

Phone screen size comparison formula

screen width = diagonal x short side ratio / sqrt(short side ratio^2 + long side ratio^2)
screen height = diagonal x long side ratio / sqrt(short side ratio^2 + long side ratio^2)
screen area = screen width x screen height
area change = (Device B area / Device A area - 1) x 100

The formula converts the advertised diagonal into physical screen width and height. The calculator treats phone ratios as portrait screens, so 19.5:9 means a tall screen with a 9-part short side and a 19.5-part long side.

Assumptions and methodology

This calculator assumes the diagonal size refers to the active display area and that the selected aspect ratio describes the usable screen shape. It does not include bezels, rounded corners, notches, camera cutouts, or software scaling.

  • Device A is the baseline; Device B is compared against it.
  • Width means the short side of the phone or tablet screen in portrait orientation.
  • Height means the long side of the screen in portrait orientation.
  • Area is the best quick signal for how much more visible space a larger phone, foldable, or tablet gives you.

Example calculations

6.1-inch phone vs 6.7-inch phone

A 6.1-inch 19.5:9 phone screen is about 2.56 in wide and 5.54 in tall, with 14.2 sq in of screen area. A 6.7-inch 19.5:9 phone screen is about 2.81 in wide and 6.08 in tall, with 17.1 sq in of screen area. That means the 6.7-inch phone has +20.6% more display area.

For foldables, aspect ratio matters even more. A 7.6-inch 6:5 foldable inner screen can have +69.1% more area than a 6.7-inch 20:9 phone screen, even though the diagonal difference sounds modest.

FAQ

How do I compare two phone screen sizes?

Use the diagonal size and aspect ratio to calculate the real screen width, height, and area. This gives a better comparison than diagonal size alone, especially when one device is taller, wider, foldable, or tablet-sized.

How much bigger is a 6.7-inch phone than a 6.1-inch phone?

With the same 19.5:9 aspect ratio, a 6.7-inch phone has +20.6% more screen area than a 6.1-inch phone. It is also +9.8% wider and +9.8% taller.

Why does a foldable screen feel much larger?

A foldable inner screen is usually much wider and less tall than a regular phone screen. In the example on this page, a 7.6-inch foldable inner display has +69.1% more screen area than a 6.7-inch tall phone display.

Is phone screen size measured diagonally?

Yes. Phone and tablet screen size is usually advertised as a diagonal measurement from one corner of the active display to the opposite corner. The calculator converts that diagonal into width, height, and area.

Does aspect ratio matter when comparing phones?

Yes. A tall 20:9 phone and a squarer foldable screen can have similar diagonals but very different usable area. Aspect ratio changes the balance between pocket width, reading space, video size, and multitasking room.

Is a bigger phone screen always better?

Not always. A larger screen can help with reading, video, gaming, and multitasking, but it can also make the phone wider, heavier, and harder to use with one hand. Compare screen area together with weight, body size, and resolution.
