How to use this calculator
Enter the TV diagonal size and choose the aspect ratio. Most modern TVs use 16:9, so leave that selected unless you are working with an ultrawide or older display.
The main result is the visible screen width and height. If you are checking whether a TV might fit in a cabinet, wall recess, or vehicle, add a frame or clearance allowance and enter the available width and height.
Formula
screen width = diagonal x aspect width / sqrt(aspect width^2 + aspect height^2)screen height = diagonal x aspect height / sqrt(aspect width^2 + aspect height^2)The formula treats the TV as a rectangle with a known diagonal and aspect ratio. It calculates the visible screen dimensions, not the full product body, stand, packaging, or wall-mount spacing.
Assumptions and methodology
TV size is measured diagonally across the visible screen. Because the aspect ratio is known, the screen width and height can be calculated exactly for that ratio. The physical TV body is a separate product specification.
- 16:9 is the default for modern TVs.
- Frame or clearance allowance is only a planning estimate, not a manufacturer measurement.
- Exact outer dimensions can differ because of bezels, speakers, stand design, and rear-panel depth.
- Check manufacturer specs before buying, mounting, shipping, or building furniture around a TV.
Example calculations
65-inch 16:9 TV dimensions
A 65-inch 16:9 screen is about 56.7 in wide and 31.9 in tall. With a 0.5 in allowance on each side, the fit-planning estimate becomes about 57.7 in by 32.9 in.

FAQ
How wide is a 65-inch TV?
A 65-inch 16:9 screen is about 56.7 in wide and 31.9 in tall. The physical TV body is usually a little larger because of bezels and model-specific design.
Are these the exact outer dimensions of the TV?
No. The formula gives visible screen dimensions. Exact outer width, height, depth, and stand dimensions vary by model and should be checked in the manufacturer's specifications.
Does the TV stand affect the dimensions?
Yes. A stand can add height and depth, and some stands require a wider surface than the visible screen. This calculator does not estimate stand depth.
Why is a 65-inch TV not 65 inches wide?
TV size is measured diagonally. For a 16:9 TV, the width is smaller than the diagonal because the diagonal runs from one corner of the screen to the opposite corner.
